We launched Fritz tha Cat (aka Ryan Somers)’s book In Search of… Divine Styler on Saturday, April 7, 2007 @ The Drake Underground (1150 Queen Street West, Toronto ON). If you’ve never heard of Divine Styler or the zine he inspired Fritz tha Cat to create… this video by Mark McKay (no relation) helps to put it in context.
I was drawn to the story as an example of the power of sheer determination - anything is possible, even tracking down an obscure rapper via a photocopied zero-budget zine with an eye toward bringing him out of retirement in order to save hip-hop.
The evening began at 8pm with a panel discussion about the book, and by 11pm it turned into a full-on party with performances by BUCK 65, DRUNCNES MONSTER, FRITZ THA CAT, MINDBENDER & MacKENZIE.
